Malik Architecture

Kamal Malik founder and principal architect of Malik Architecture based out of Mumbai, has done some outstanding work over the last 25 years and still continues to do so. A little over 10  years ago, his son Arjun joined the practice, and after a complete rebranding of the firm, has continued with his father, bringing a completely fresh perspective to their design approach.

This house in Alibaug, photographed about 6 years ago was one of the earlier projects of this new collaborative entity, and was designed and built for the Kapoor family. Perched on a gentle sloping hillside in Alibaug, its strong geometry, soaring roof forms and use of metal cladding defined an entirely new direction for Malik Architecture.

At first glance, my impression was that it would be quite a difficult assignment since no two lines within the interior or the exterior of the house were parallel or perpendicular to each other. However, it turned out to be a challenging project which resulted in some amazing imagery. It subsequently led to the firm doing another house, again for the Kapoor family, within a few metres from the first in a very similar and unique style.
